SWIMMING POOL AT ROLLESTON
OFFICIAL OPENING ON SATURDAY
A 40ft learners’ swimming pool was officially opened at the Rolleston School by the chairman of the Canterbury Education Board (Mr S. J. Irwin) on Saturday. The baths were built with funds raised by a concert, raffles, and contributions from the people of the surrounding district. Excavations were begun last September, and the pool was in preliminary use before Christmas. The cost of the work was nearly £7OO. Speakers at the opening ceremony included the chairman of the Springs County Council (Mr E. J. Stalker), the chairman of the Paparua County Council (Mr W. F. McArthur), Mr O. F. Rowe, chairman of the school’s baths committee, and Mr H. Nicolle, chairman of the Rolleston School Commitee. Visitors were welcomed by the headmaster (Mr F. A. Morrison). When the formal ceremony was over children gave a demonstration of the sequences of learning to swim. Before the pool was constructed pupils of the school had to travel either to a pool at Burnham or to one at West Melton. Transport difficulties arose, and it was decided to build a pool for the school.
