BOXING
BROWN TO FIGHT DAWSON
(New Zealand Press Association) DANNEVIRKE, Feb. 13.
Barry Brown, of Dannevirke, British Empire welter-weight boxing champion, will fight Freddie Dawson, an American negro boxer, at present in Australia, for £BOOO.
This was announced today bv Brown’s father, Mr R. Brown, who is his trainermanager. The fight will take place in Sydney op March 19. Arrangements were made yesterday after a radio-telephone conversation between Mr Mawson, president of the Australian Boxing Club, and Mr Brown. Mr Mawson will fly to New Zealand next week to complete arrangements and have the contract signed-
Dawson. who claims the world light-welter-weight title and is rated seventh by the “Ring” magazine among welterweights. has an unbeaten record in Australia.
He was to have fought Brown at Hastings earlier this month, but the contract for that bout was affected by Brown’s winning the British Empire title when he beat Gerald Dreyer, in the seventh round at the Basin Reserve, Wellington, on January 15.
