HUMAN BEHAVIOUR
Sir, —Human behaviour in our present society depends a great deal on our present economic system. Under these conditions people tend to justify their actions, even though, from a humanitarian point of view, these are fundamentally wrong. Thus the inhumanity of the treatment of native races and the repression of minorities do not worry the consciences of the selected few. They seem quite happy about it all. A wealthy employer can justify his accumulation of riches on the grounds that he gives employment to many workmen; and he sincerely believes that he benefits mankind. Take away the money incentive, and human beings will turn to working and living for each other.— Yours, etc.. PJ.A. .. December 16, 1953.
