BLOCKED DRAINS
Sir,—lt is not correct for the Drainage Board to say it is only during heavy rain that sewage overflows into creeks. I have seen it flowing into creeks during fine weather. When rubbish from flats and factories is flushed into street sewers and blocks them, the sewage has to go somewhere. The board should do something better than merely put a threatening notice in lavatories; it is simply ignored. The street sewers get blocked, sewage rises in the smaller pipes leading to houses, and often blocks- them. The board contents itself by forcing ratepayers to employ licensed extortionists to clear such drains and encourages them to overcharge.—Yours, etc., WILLIAM ANDERSON. November 7» 1953.
