VISCOUNT’S PERFORMANCE

Sir, —The Comet, Albatross, and deltas have been dragged into this discussion. The Comet was not entered because this most modern airliner had no more hope of beating the ‘‘oldfashioned” DC-6 than did 1 the Viscount. The Albatross, was almost a complete failure. It consisted mainly of plywood and glue and the prototype broke in halves when wheeled out for its first flight. The second similarly collapsed its undercarriage. Only one airline ever bought them. None survived more than a few years, compared with the hundreds of DC-4s stilloperating. The first modern deltawing aircraft was the Convair XF-92. ‘Sie Hastings was designed at the same time as the DC-6. If Mr Frengley is still unable to see Lord Brabazon’s meaning he can argue it saut with him from here. I give up’—Yours, etc., > H.M.
