FREEHOLDERS’ RIGHTS
Sir,—lt is indeed ludicrous to read of the Prime Minister taking Dr. Mazengarb to task for daring to criticise the'fafe of Parliamentary petitions. Mr Holland soys “the system of Parliamentary petitioning is an important constitutional right of every citizen and as a Government we| endeavour to safeguard those rights and dispense British justice.” Dr. Mazengarb is quite right.- How many petitions are disallowed for technical reasons? What percentage of petitioners receive any consideration, let alone British justice? The dice is loaded against petitioners, as it is against for compensation in the Assessment Court, in claims concerning the taking of land compulsorily, where there is no right of appeal Mr Holland and his Cabinet approved of taking freehold land compulsorily and condone the most objectionable conduct therewith by the Ministry of Works. Mr Holland should not talk about “British justice.”— Yours, etc., . INTERESTED. November 8, 1953.
