CHARTERIS BAY YACHT CLUB

The first races for the Coombes Cup and the Coornbes anchor were sailed by the Charteris Bay Yacht and Power Boat Club on Sunday. Both trophies are awarded on the results of two races sailed during the season.

The Coombes Cup, first race for I-class yachts, was won by Valada, sailed by Misses Heather and Pipa Wills, over two rounds of a course from the club house and including Hay’s Bay, Potts, Mansons, and Smarts marks, in a moderate to fresh north-east wind. Four boats started. Thirteen boats started in the first race lor the Coombes anchor trophy, for boats of any class, held over two rounds of the same course. Four of the X-class boats, Venture, Haze, Tempo and Genie, which will be starting in the trials to be held at Lyttelton for the Sanders Cup, started in this race, and competition was very keen. Results:—

Coombes Cup.—Valada (Miss H. Wills), 12min, 3hr 23min 55sec, 1; Ariel (A. Williams), scr, 3hr 24min 28sec, 2; Kismet (F. Mackey), smin, 3hr 25min 43sec, 3.

Coombes Anchor.—Lyric (R-class, W. Lindsay), 3min, 3hr 22min 54sec, 1; Genie (X-class, E. Sinclair), 2min, 3hr 26min 3sec, 2; Tempo (X-class, G. Moor), 2min, 3hr 28min 40sec, 3.
