NATIONAL DANCING COMPETITIONS

PRELIMINARY EVENTS HELD

The first events on the programme of the eleventh annual competitions of the North Canterbury centre of the New Zealand Piping and Dancing Association were held at the Scottish Hall last evening, before a large audience. All other classes will be held at the Caledonian

and Scottish halls today, and at the Methodist schoolroom, Sydenham, this evening. This year's contest has attracted 685 entries, and dancers have come from as far as Palmerston North and Invercargill. Included in the programme are one New Zealand title, two South Island and five provincial championships, all of which should provide keen competition. Judges were Mesdames Alma McKenzie (Hamilton) and M. Lucas (Christchurch). Official pipers were Messrs S. Chisholm, N. Burney, J. Wiltshire, and A. Miller. Results were as follows: Highland Fling, under eight (25).—Kay Hunter, 70 points, 1; Juie Mitchell, 69, 2; Robyn Hamburger, 68, 3. Irish Jig, eight and under 10 (42). Suzanne Dobbs, 76 points. 1; Wendy Cannon, 75, 2; Joy Nightingale, 74, 3. Highland Fling, Novice, 12 and over (11).—Paula Ford. 69 points. 1; Wiki Brown, 68, 2; Janet Potts, 67, 3.
