POLICE RAID ON NIGHT CLUB

Names Of Australian Cricketers Taken (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright)

LONDON, Sept. 20. Two Australian test cricketers were among 60 persons whose names were taken when 40 policemen last night raided Edinburgh’s exclusive Porch Club and arrested the manager, Edward Bourke-Haliburton, the 29-year-old son of the club president, the Countess of Mayo. The Australians were present as the guests of a former club office-bearer. The police seized three van-loads of cigarettes, whisky, French wine and beer, and a roulette wheel. Bourke-Haliburton was released this morning—the police said he had been held “pending charges”—and he safd the club was a residential philosophical night club, with its cultural side and art classes.

He said: “The roulette wheel came from our cardroom, where apart from this game we play poker and pontoon.”
