SOVIET PILOTS IN KOREA

“WHOLE FORMATIONS” REPORTED

(Rec. 10 p.m.) SEOUL, September 19. The commander of the United States sth Air Force (Lieutenant-General S. E. Anderson) said today that the whole formation of Russian-manned M.I.G. jets fought against United States Sabres during the Korean war. He said the Soviet Union used Korea as a testing ground for its nilots and the superiority of United states airpower was clearly established. There have been many reports of Russian M.I.G. pilots in Korea, but General Anderson’s report is believed to be the first of Soviet formations fighting as units. General Anderson said generally Russians flew with Russians, Chinese with Chinese, and Koreans with' Koreans, because different nationalities could not understand each other and take orders in the air. He estimated that Soviet pilots man about 425 of some 1600 Communist jets stationed in North Korea and Manchuria since the armistice. He said the Communists had an air force of about 2300 planes, including jets.
