MALENKOV ON CONFERENCE

“U.S. Not Seeking Agreement”

(NJZ. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 11.30 p.m.) MOSCOW, Sept 20. The fact that India and other Eastern countries had been left out of the political conference on Korea indicated that America did not want to implement the armistice agreement in Korea, the Soviet Prime Minister (Mr Malenkov) said last night x It also indicated, he said, that the American ruling classes did not wish to make another step towards a decisive peaceful settlement of the Korean question. Referring to the recent ’United. States-South Korean agreement, Mr Malenkov said: “It is planned to go on maintaining South Korea in the status of a military springboard of the United States, which obviously runs counter to the exigencies of a final peaceful settlement of the Korean question and the strengthening of security in Asia. The greater therefore, the responsibility of all peaceloving forces; they can and must turn the truce in Korea into impetus for new efforts aimed at further easing international tensions throughout the world, including the East.” Mr Malenkov said aggressive circles refused to take into account the fact that th£ old Asia was now in the past. “Two sources nurtured the will of the Korean patriot, to victory—their gallantry and their heroism in the struggle,” he said. “The immortal feat of the Chinese People’s volunteers was proof of the indestructive ties which link the peoples of Asia. This sign of a new era which has begun in the East is a sign of determination of the Asian people to obtain and defend their national liberty and independence, their determination not to allow Asia to become the hotbed of a new world war.

“By their heroic struggle on the field of Korea, the glorious Korean and Chinese patriots have dealt a very perceptible blow to the Far Eastern plans of reactionary forces aimed at crushing the progressive movement of the peoples of Asia and the bastion of the Pacific Ocean along the way of national freedom and independence.” U.S. “Interference” in East Alleging American interference in the internal affairs of Eastern States, Mr Malenkov said: “Only people who disregard what is going on in the world can reduce their foreign policy in Eastern countries to the support of precisely those individuals ana groups that embody all that is backward, corrupt and rotten. Only people deliberately striving for artificial involvement situations in the East can allow themselves to scorn the great Chinese people and bank on outcasts such as the Chiang Kai-shek clique. “Such a policy is a shortsighted one, for it is impossible to ignore the fundamental changes which have taken place in Asia and the Pacific and which are making their imprint on the post-war life of more than a milliard people in this area.’’ . Mr Malenkov added that the armistice in Korea had shown that “peaceloving forces can achieve due settlement of acute international. problems if they display fortitude and persistence.”
