NEW ZEALAND PLAYERS

Sir, —I have been reading for a long time your criticisms on theatre plays and pictures. I did not agree with them all the timfe, but I let them pass without comment. But today your criticism concerning the “Ring Around the Moon,” presented by the New Zealand Players, put an end to my, and, I hear, many other persons’, patience. It is absolutely an absurd and misunderstanding criticism. It is mentioned that it was “over-acted” and “over-done.” It was not, and I am referring to the original performance in London. Your critic should first have a knowledge of art, theatre, and drama and should read a lot before he criticises Anouilh and Fry, what they meant, and how they want their plays. I regret that New Zealand’s own professional company is treated in this absurd manner. -—Yours, etc., JOHN ESTERHAZY. September 17, 1953.
