A PLUNKET DEMONSTRATION

Sir, —Recently 3ZB recorded. the demonstration by a Plunket nurse of the bathing of a young baby at a local school. Everyone seemed to be happy about the result except the three-months-old baby used for the demonstration. His most distressing cries for help in what he found to be a frightening situation went completely unheeded. The announcer did say “Poor little man” as he was removed from hearing, still deeply distressed. The children were given a demonstration of good bathing technique no doubt, but an opportunity of demonstrating good mothering was missed. Indeed, I feel that, if the Plunket nurse realised what was involved for the baby in this situation, she would never allow so young a child to be submitted to such an ordeal, and in no circumstances would she take the mother’s place in ministering to her child.—Yours, etc., HELP THE HELPLESS. September 10, 1953. [This letter was referred to the secretary of the Plunket Society (Miss L. M. Scott) who had no comment to make.]
