CANTERBURY BRASS BANDS

PROVINCIAL CONTEST AT RANGIORA Nine bands will play at the Canterbury provincial brass bands* contest, to be held at Dudley Park, Rangiora, on October 3. Five will compete in the C grade, and two in the B grade, and there will be two guest bands. The street march will be headed by the North Canterbury Caledonian Pipe Band, and the band of the Royal New Zealand Air Force station, Wigram, will be at the rear. At the end of the March the bands will be played into the park by the pipe band. B and C grade bands in the street march will be combined for judging on military points only. The winner will receive the Harold Marks Silver Cup, which will be won outright.

A welcome will be extended by the Mayor of Rangiora (Mr C. W. Tyler), and the inspection and quickstep will follow. The pipe band will then give a demonstration while the C grade bands are preparing to play their marches for the Lyttelton Marine Cup. After this, all bands will again assemble in front of the bandstand for the playing of a march and a hymn under the baton of the judge (Mr R. J. Estall).

Hymn and test selections will be played in the evening. The trophies will be presented by Mr Tyler after the evening’s events. The bands competing will be: — B Grade: Third Armoured Regiment, Christchurch Municipal. C Grade: Rangiora Brass, Ellesmere Brass, Kaiapoi Brass, Sumner Silver, and Lyttelton Marine.
