ASHLEY RIVER PROTECTION

Sir, —The protective works recently put in above the Ashley traffic bridge via Rangiora will suffer the same fate; as the previous work. The river above I the bridge is incfeasing its curvature;; therefore a proper dead-water line of defence must go in, otherwise the river will be south of the bridge. Waikuku Beach Domain must be protected in the same way. All shingle-bearing rivers work on such curvatures, which cause lateral erosion. It is recognised by all river experts that if you cannot control lateral erosion you cannot control the 'rivers. This applies to all rivers under the jurisdiction of the Catchment- Board. Therefore we cannot expect any relief from flooding or rates until they finish their experiments.—Yours, etc., r T TV A T August 28, 1953.
