LIFTING TRAM TRACKS

Sir, —S. W. Hickmott protests strongly against the Riccarton track being lifted before the Sumner, and he quotes the amount of road traffic using Ferry road. Rome was not built in a day; and the Sumner tracks tvill be lifted in due course. In the meantime, if he lives close to the tram track, he can be thankful to the board for allowing reception without tram interference. Riccarton carries more heavy traffic daily that Sumner by a long way,'lncluding the heaviest petrol waggon, which runs from Lyttelton to Ashburton, and all the heavy lorries between Christchurch, Timaru, Dunedin, and Invercargill. Has Mr Hickmott ever thought of turning right into Humphreys drive immediately after crossing the Heathcote bridge, and getting a first-class road right into the city that will save him using Ferry road?—Yours, etc., W. LEWIS. August 29, 1953.
