NORTH RAILWAY LINE CLEAR
LAST SLIP CLEARED ON SATURDAY • The Christchurch-Picton section of the South Island main trunk railway was clear of slips again on Saturday. The line had been blocked by abo,ut 12 slips between Hundalee and Kaikoura ranging from 20 or 30 cubic yards to 800 cubic yards of material. These slips had all been cleared by about 9 p.m. on Friday, but in the early hours of Saturday morning another slip came down near Hundalee. The first lhat was known about this slip was when an early morning goods train from Kaikoura ran into it. The slip was not large and the material was fairly soft so that the train and engine were undamaged. Work was immediately resumed to clear the material and the line was again open about 7.30 a.m.
