REMOVAL OF OLD TRAM TRACKS

BOARD’S PROGRAMME OUTLINED When the contractors to the Christchurch Transport Board had finished lifting the tram rails on the New Brighton route, a start would be made on lifting the rails on the Cashmere Hills route from the foot of Hackthorne road to the Sign of the Takahe, said the chairman of the board (Mr. F. L. Brandt) yesterday. Excellent progress was being made on the New Brighton route, said Mr Brandt. A start would soon be made on the rails in Hackthorne road, as he understood that the Heathcote County Council was anxious to put the road in order. He also hoped that a start could be made on lifting the rails on the Riccarton route next month, Mr Brandt said. Before the work could be begun, however, the board would have to confer with the local bodies concerned—the Christchurch City, Riccarton Borough, and Paparua County Councils—and with the Main Highways Board. For the convenience of road users, work on the Riccarton route would be started at the terminus, said Mr Brandt. ■
