FULBRIGHT AWARD TO SWIMMER
AUCKLAND MAN TO STUDY IN U.S. (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 21. A prominent Auckland swimmer . an<f surfer, G. Gardner, has been awarded a Fulbright scholarship for a year’s study at an American university. He is the first New Zealander to gain a Fulbright award in physical education. Gardner will leave for the University of California, Los Angeles, in six weeks. He intends to specialise in corrective physical education and adult recreation. Gardner is a son of Mr Alan Gardner, chairman of the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Surf Life-saving Association. Aged 22, he was one of the original 30 students at the School of Physical Education in Otago when it was founded in 1948. He graduated in 1951. He has an impressive record as a swimmer, water-polo player, and surfer. A New Zealand University; Blue three times, he was captain-1 manager of the University swimming and water polo team that visited Australia early this year.
