TAXATION OF FARMERS

Sir, —In today’s issue the Federated Farmers again complain about high land values causing embarrassment in meeting death duties. Is this the same Federated Farmers who voted to get the Land Sales Act lifted so that their land could appreciate in value? At least three-quarters of the farmers never want to sell their land. They have everything to gain by keeping land values low and the Land Sales Act did this. In many cases their land has increased in value by 100 per cent. This means |faat the grade of their death duties has risen and they often pay 200 or 300 per cent. more. Even with a 20 per cent, reduction in death duties they often pay 100 per cent, more than they did before. There is little doubt, now, that these farmers were taken for a “ride” by the lifting of the Land Sales Act.—Yours, etc., J. G. BARCLAY. July 17, 1953.
