CULTURAL SOCIETY

ADDRESS BY PROFESSOR POCOCK

Professor L. G. Pocock gave an interesting address at the monthly meeting of the Christchurch Cultural Society on Saturday, when he spoke on impressions gained by him on revisiting South Africa recently. The beauty and spaciousness of the country were noted with pleasure by Professor Pocock, who described many changes that had taken place in the country since his former visit. Among noticeable trends were the drift of the coloured people to the towns and the preponderance of Dutch in the public service, probably because they were bilingual. Professor Pocock said he felt that most of the white inhabitants' agreed that the natives should be better educated.

Before the address, a pleasing programme of music was presented by liss Betty Brosnan, for whose songs Miss Annas Gale played the piano accompaniments, Mr Trevor Hutton, who played flute solos with obligatos by Miss Althea Harley-Slack, and Mr Vernon Reid, for whose songs Mrs W. E. Olds was accompanist. Mrs H. A. Young thanked the speaker and the artists. Two new members were elected, bringing the society’s membership to a record figure.
