Reference to the death of Mrs C. S. Thompson was made at a meeting of the Canterbury Education Board yesterday and members stood in silence as a mark of respect to her memory. The board decided to send a letter of sympathy to Mr C. S. Thompson, who is the oldest member of the board. Mr David Combridge spoke on the cultivation of polyanthus at the July meeting of the garden circle of the women’s section of the Returned Services’ Association. The meeting was held in the Returned Services’ Association committee room, where Miss A. L. Smith presided. Competitions resulted as follows: decorative, class A, Mrs J. McCrossan 1, Mrs A. Nesbit 2, Mrs A. E. Cooper 3; class B, Mr H. A. Bishop 1, Mrs Odell 2, Mrs R. East 3; cut flowers, class A, Mrs Whiteley 1, Mrs Cooper 2. Miss S. Britton 3; class B, Mrs Odell 1, Mrs East 2, Mrs L. F. Emmerson 3.

There was a large attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Christchurch branch of the Family Planning Association last evening. Mrs B. Zeff presided and introduced the guest speaker, Mr L. Pownall. senior lecturer in geography at Canterbury University College. Mr Pownall spoke on world population trends from a geographer’s point of view.

Mrs Logan, a member of the West of England Women’s Association, who is leaving soon for a visit to Britain, was the guest of honour at the monthly meeting of the association. She was presented with a travelling clock.

Miss A. M. Watson presided at the July meeting of the Shirley-St. Albans Garden Club. Mr Moran, the guest speaker, spoke on indoor plants, their division, cultivation, ana repotting. The competition results were:—bulbs in fibre, A grade: Mrs L. A. Bennett 1, Mrs T. Locke 2, Mrs B. E. Henderson 3. B grade: Mrs L. Cuming 1, Mrs P. Wise 2, Mrs G. H. Parr 3. Succulent garden in miniature, A grade: Mrs Bennett 1, Mrs Locke 2, Mrs S. Kidd 3. B grade: Mrs F. Le Pine 1, Mrs E. E. Booth 2, Miss A. M. Watson 3. The hostesses were Mesdames Parr, Wise. Cuming, E. E. Booth, and H. Booth.

Final plans for the forthcoming ball of the Cust sub-branch of the Plunket Society were made at a recent meeting of the branch. Members of the committee expressed their thanks to those who had contributed to the annual house-to-house collection when the record sum of more than £3O was raised. The resignation of the treasurer (Mrs J. Jamieson), because of ill-health, was received with regret. Mrs L. Thompson was appointed to fill the vacancy.

Mrs C. E. Boon presided at the July meeting of the Beckenham-Huntsbury Garden Club. Members stood in silence as a mark of resmect to Mrs Mintrom. a member who died recently. Mrs N. W. Gale was the guest speaker, her subject being "Floral decorations.” The hostesses were Mrs H. Fuller and Mrs M. Coxon. Competition results were:—a container of dried material: A grade, Mrs R. Elcock and Mrs E. Heyward (equal) 1, Mrs H. Fuller 2. Mrs Johnston 3; B grade. Mrs C. E. Boon 1, Mrs G. Hosking 2, Mrs Sparks 3. Best bloom: Mrs Fuller 1, Mrs Boon 2, Mrs Elcock 3.

Members of the Spreydon sub-centre of the Red Cross Society recently visited “Rest Haven,” and presented a programme of entertainment for the residents. The items included songs •by Mrs I. Wilson, duets by Mrs Woodcock and Mrs Sloan, humorous recitations by Mrs Wilson and Mrs Woodcock. and a sketch, followed by community singing.
