PRIZE IN ESSAY COMPETITION
WELLINGTON WOMAN TO VISIT NEW YORK
Mrs J- K. Alexander, of Wellington, winner of this year’s United Nations international essay competition, is paying a short visit to Christchurch, and will leave today on her return to Wellington. The competition, which is open to all countries of the world except America, has been held annually for the last five years. This year 50 countries entered essays, and the best two from each country were sent to New York where a panel of judges awarded prizes to the 10 entrants they considered had submitted outstanding essays. For the first time one prize was awarded to a New Zealander—Mrs Alexander. The prize is a month’s holiday in N<»w York and an allowance of 12J dollars a day for expenses. The prize-winners will attend meetings of the United Nations observers. Mrs Alexander was formerly Miss Alison Hopkins, of Christchurch. She attended the Christchurch Girls’ High School and trained at the Christchurch Teachers’ College. As a student of Canterbury University College, she began to study for her B.A. degree, which she completed at Otago University. and later took her M.A. degree at Victoria University College, Wellington. She is now studying for her LL.B, degree. Mrs Alexander expects to leave for New York early in September. In Christchurch she has been visiting her brother and her aunt, Mrs C. Cogswell.
