BURNING-OFF WHEN PAINTING

COUNCIL NOT TO MAKE BY-LAW

Because the Master Painters’ Guild had adopted precautions, by agreement with the Fire Underwriters’ Council, to be observed when painters were burning off buildings, the bylaws committee reported to the City Council last evening that it did not believe that a by-law was necessary. The Christchurch Fire Board had asked for the by-law. Cr. C. Baldwin said the board desired the by-law to cover home painters. He moved, and Cr. W. P. Glue seconded, that the question be referred back to the committee. Cr. T. H. McCombs said the by-law could not be policed. Cr. W. P. Warner said he was loth to believe that the master painters were as holy as they claimed to be. Good purpose had been served by the publicity, but further consideration should be given by the committee. Cr. Baldwin’s amendment was rejected. The Mayor (Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P.): I suggest that the Fire Board itself should have some discussion about it.
