SUMNER BEACH LOWER
REPLACEMENT OF STONE QUARRY TO REOPEN SOON The tendency for the level of Sumner beach to drop throughout its length over the past months was reported to the City Council last evening by the works committee. “Because of attrition, the stone placed on the beach is slowly lessening and some replacement will be necessary shortly—as expected,” it reported. “Because of the lowering of the beach near the Scarborough wall it will be advisable to add a fair amount of rock at the bottom of the wall in an attempt to prevent its undermining. For these purposes the quarry will be shortly reopened. “When the sea is rough the beach tends to flatten, making it lower inshore. At the Scarborough end the sea at high tide is deeper against the wall and consequently the waves are bigger and when breaking against the wall throw large volumes of water over it. Much of this water finds its way across the intervening space to and across the road, to the channel, whence it is returned to the sea. This trouble has occurred on a few occasions lately. “The lowering extends along the beach and some scouring is still taking place between Cave Rock and Shag Rock. This latter is. of course, desirable as the shifting of the sand in this locality is necessary before the channel will move,” said the committee. “On the New Brighton side there has also been some scouring over the last few weeks, and this has extended into a few bays of some of the fences. Generally, however, the build-up at the important point opposite Shag Rock is continuing.”
