COAL MINERS
Sir, —The information given today under the heading “Miners Decline to Walk.” will no doubt provide indignation in those who do not understand the position. There is a definite scientific explanation. The miners, above all others engaged in an essential industry, need our help and compassion. They are shut out from the vitalising rays of the sun for the best part of the day. The one thing which would counteract this deficiency of sunlight is a diet of vitamin-containing foods. But these poor souls get neither the sunlight nor the proper foods—fresh vegetables, and fruit in particular. If the coal-fields are lacking in the cultivation which would ensure plenty of vitalising food, it is because these men are lacking the stimulation which would ensure their production—just as their refusal to walk was due to lack of vitality.—Yours, etc.. M. G. DAVIES. Kowai Bush. June 18. 1953.
