Sir,—l notice that all those who advocate fire-branding of horses qualify the statement that it is not cruel by saying “if properly done.” This is an admission that it does leave the door open to cruelty, and considering the very few cases where horses become mixed I fail to see that it is necessary. There are far more cases of mistaken identity amongst humans, an no-one has yet suggested that we should all be branded, or even tatooed or earmarked. I agree with a member of the Canterbury Jockey Club that it is a retrograde step, and I hope that our thoroughbreds will not be disfigured in this “a™«-Your Sj ete., jONEs Geraldine. June 18. 1953.
