MEDITERRANEAN SEA RAID
Seven Men Released By Court (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 8 pum.) MARSEILLES, June 20. A French judge today granted provisional liberty to Seven men, including an Australian, imprisoned over an alleged attack on the Dutch vessel Combinatie (of 249 tons) near the Straits of Gibraltar last year. The Combinatie. loaded with 100,000 dollars worth of American cigarettes, was allegedly “hijacked** by the crew of a second vessel and masked men seized the cargo. The released men were Ernest Townsend, of Australia, Sigurd Loien, of Sweden. Edouard Engelsman, of Holland, and four Frenchmen, Dominique Marziotti. Jean Riera, Adrien Sa vino, and Marcel Verde.
Sidney Paley, an American businessman, was fined 6500 dollars and placed on probation over the alleged “hijacking** by an appeal Court in Tangier in north-west Africa last May. At the Court hearing in Tangier last December it was stated that the raid on the Combinatie was made from the 66-ton British yacht Esme.
■Hie previous month four Britons, members of the Esme’s crew, were arrested on piracy charges, but were later released.
