TORCH CARRYING

Sir,—ln “The Press” today tho Transport Department has a huge advertisement advising pedestrians using a road without a footpath to walk on the right side of the roadway, facing traffic, and in preference wear white clothing. All right so far; but then it concludes: “Better still, carry a torch.” I consider this unsound advice. Traffic meeting a white light endeavours to pass it on the left, and such action could put a motor-cyclist or motorist into a power pole, fence, or river. Better for the pedestrian to jump into the rough stuff, if in danger, and all concerned stay alive.—Yours, etc., JOHN D. EMMETT. June 11. 1953.
