GREAT NORTHERN STEEPLECHASE

DUNWOLD HAS EASY SUCCESS

LADY CAENWOOD PAYS WIN DIVIDEND OF £294

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 1

Revelling in the heavy going, Dunwold outstayed the field on the second day of the Auckland Racing Club’s winter meeting in the £4OOO Great Northern Steeplechase at Ellersile today. He won by 14 lengths from last year’s winner, Dural, with Clifton 12 lengths away third.

The gruelling four-mile course took its usual heavy toll, six horses falling, one baulking, and one being pulled up. Only six of the 14 runners finished. The winning double. Dunwold and Himiler, paid £4B 3s for £l. Beautifully fine weather attracted a large attendance. The track was heavy. The totalisator on course handled £264,105 15s, including £33,025 5s in doubles; off-course £62,650 15s, including £26.894 15s in doubles —a total of £326,756 10s. Bagby, was suspended for one month at an adjourned inquiry yesterday into alleged interference to several runners in the Cornwall Handicap on Saturday. An inquiry was held Into alleged Interference by Peter Ora, ridden by W. Eales, to Belgravia, just short of the last fence in the Remuera Hurdles. The judicial committee held that Peter Ora had crossed over too quickly, and Eales was also suspended from June 1 to June 30 inclusive. An inquiry Into the falling of Logline and Glamour Boy in the second division of the Carbine Plate was adjourned until June 6. Cyclades broke a shoulder when he fell in the Hunt Cup Steeples, and had to be destroyed.
