MEETING AT HUTT PARK

IRISH FLAX WINS MEMORIAL

PORANUI AGAIN BEATS SPRINTERS "The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON. June 1.

Two little-fancied horses, Irish Flax and Jolly Swagman, paid £326 10s Rd for £1 in the double on the concluding day of the Wellington Trotting Club's winter meeting today. Irish Flax was a firstday winner, and made a successful appearance in '(the higher grade. Jolly Swagman finished sixth on Saturday after assisting with the pace, and today held on much better for a six-length win. Irish Flax, with the trail all the way, finished well to win the August Memorial Handicap from Lucky Scholar and Stormy Ways. Neon Ring, Irish Flax, Denver Hall, Merty Gold, Cherokee, and Courser comprised the leading division, the favourite, Scottish Note, Having broken at the end of two furlongs. Then followed Lucky Scholar and Lassoloc, Last Scott and Sah Paula, Chipping Warden, Dainty Doll, Live Wire, Sandy Sutherland, Stormy Ways, Lexeter, and Scottish Note. Neon Ring tired after passing the half-mile, and Merry Gold took over to lead into the straight by three lengths from Irish Flax and Cherokee, with Lucky Scholar and Stormy Ways improving from further back. Irish Flax soon ran past Merry Gold, and was not troubled to win from Lucky Scholar and Stormy Ways, both of which finished well. Merry Gold was a good fourth, two lengths ahead of Cherokee, which broke at the half-furlong, when challenging. Scottish Note made up ground for sixth, with Last Scott, Denver Hall, Lassaloc, Dainty Doll, Exeter, and San Paula next.

Jolly Swagman’s Win Jolly Swagman ran on well In the Wellington Handicap to win untroubled by six lengths. Traducer failed to go away, and Royal Present, Social Justice, and Sheriff Hall were slow. At the end of a furlong, Jolly Swagman reached the front to make the running. Down the back he increased his lead, and at the straight entrance was five lemgths clear of Flying Pilot, Royal Present, Sheriff Hall, and Icicle Lad. Jolly Swagman had too much in reserve at the end. Icicle Lad came on strongly to shade Gypsy Queen and Social Justice for second. Two lengths back were Sheriff Hall and Hinepo. then came Royal Present, Flying Pilot, Young Dictator, and Laura Hall. Brooklyn Star's sulky wheel was buckled in • a collision with Traducer, and both were pulled up. Poranul’s Second Win Racing well from the back mark, the first day winner, Poranui, completed a double for the meeting, when she got up to win the Farewell Handicap. Bourbon Lass, Centennial Globe, and' Lassoloc broke at the start. Drucilla made the running from Mecca Chief, Barney Dillon, Last Scott, Cherokee, Special News (in a break). Peggy Scott, and Merry Gold (also breaking). After half a mile, Special News moved fast to trail Mecca Chief, with Drucilla. Last Scott, Barney Dillon, Lady Rolleston, Peggy Scott, Cherokee, Courser, and Kim Pointer following. Cherokee broka past the three furlongs, and Lady Rolleston was checked. Poranui was making up ground, but Mecca Chief. Drucilla, and Special News were ahead of her turning for home. Halfway down the straight, Drucilla took the lead, but she was run down by Poranui. Mecca Chief held on for third, a head in front of Stormy Ways. Then there were three lengths to Barney Dillon, vjjth Lucky Scholar. Merry Gold, Lassoloc, Special News, Bourbon Lass, and Last Scott next. The weather was overcast but fine. The track was dead. There was a large attendance. On-course investments amounted to £62,541 15s, compared with £67,645 on the second day last year. The total for the meetiag was £119.208 10s, compared with £106,822, an increase of £12,386 10s. J. F. Foley, driver of Traducer in the Wellington Handicap, had his licence suspended until July 31. He was found guilty of careless driving, when Traducer and Brooklyn Star became Involved In a collision. H. Purdon was fined £3 for excessive use of the whip on Neon Ring in the August Memorial Handicap.
