OTAGO WINS SOUTH ISLAND TITLE

(New Zealand Press Association) OAMARU, June 1. Winning all its three games, the Otago badminton team retained its title in the inter-provincial Neill Cup badminton series played at Oamaru at the weekend. Otago beat Canterbury by 10 games to 5. Southland by 11 games to 5, and North Otago by 15 games to 1. Otago will now meet the winner of the North Island interprovincial competition for th* New Zealand title. The following were the detailed results of the Otago-Canterbury match (Otago names first): — Men’s Singles.—L. A. Scott beat R. G. Pattinson, 15-3, 15-3; A. Law lost to R. Macefield, 16-18, 4-15; Abdullah beat A. Roberts, 15-7, 15-4; C. Stapp lost to J. Read, 10-15, 15-6, 7-15. Women’s Singles—Miss S. Cox beat Miss D. Bennett, 11-6, 11-1; Miss G. Cox beat Miss L. W’oodward, 11-4, 11-3; Mrs D. Hay beat Miss A. Snow, 11-6, 11-6; Miss M. Steedman lost to Miss J. Cartwright, 11-5, 5-11, 2-11. Men’s Doubles.—Scott and Law beat Pattinson and Roberts, 18-13, 15-10. The second doubles match was not played. Women’s Doubles—Misses F. and G. Cox beat Misses Bennett and Snow, 15-11,15-6; Mrs Hay and Miss Steedman beat Misses Woodward and Cartwright, 13-15, 15-4, 15-8.

Mixed Doubles.—Scott and Miss S. Cox beat Pattinson and Miss Cartwright 15-8, 15-4; Law and Miss G. Cox lost to Roberts and Miss Bennett, 14-18, 11-15; Abdullah and Miss Steedman lost to Macefield and Miss Woodward, 4-15, 3-15. Stapp and and Mrs Hay beat Read and Miss Snow, 15-5, ID-IZ.
