ARREST MADE AT PALACE
Attempt To Present Petition (N.Z. Press Association— Copyright) LONDON, May 8. Garry Davis, the self-styled “World Citizen No. 1," was arrested today after he had made a dash into the Buckingham Palace grounds to try to see the Queen. Davis, a former American bomber pilot, who a few years ago tore up his United States passport, wanted to ask the Queen to extend his permit to stay in Britain. He claims that he faces deportation or gaol if he remains in Britain, as his permit to live and work there expired on April 28, and his request for an extension has been rejected. “I am asking for the fundamental right to work,’* Davis shouted when the police grabbed him inside the Palace grounds this morning. He had spent some time outside the Palace last night waiting for a message from the Queen to an earlier appeal “in the name of humanity.” He slipped in past the sentry on duty this morning and, after being chased by policemen, he pulled a copy of the petition from his pocket, dropped his belongings on the ground and refused to move.
