INJURY TO BACK LAST SATURDAY

M. E. Chapple, who has been included in the 12 players to represent New Zealand in the second test match at Auckland against the South Africans on Friday, may not be available to play. Last Saturday, while fielding for Lancaster Park against Old Boys he pulled a muscle in his back, and this injury hampered him for the remainder of the match. He will, however, travel to Wellington to meet the rest of the team, but the decision whether he is fit to play will rest with the selectors. Last evening Chapple said the injury was not troubling him very much. He had been to a doctor and had received medical attention for it. CANTERBURY MATCH REVIEWED « MOST ENJOYABLE SINCE FIJIANS ” Reporting to the management committee of the Canterbury Cricket Association last evening, the manager of the Canterbury cricket team which played the South Africans at Lancaster Park on February 28 and March 2 and 3, Mr R. L. B. Poore, said the cricket on these days was the most enjoyable and satisfactory seen at Lacaster Park for some time. Saturday’s and Monday’s play, in particular, did much to reinstate the popularity of the game with the public. “It is to be hoped that more of the type of cricket played by Canterbury in this match wili be seen in future,” said Mr Poore. . The chairman of the meeting (Mr T. W. C. Tothill) said this was the most enjoyable game seen at Lancaster Park since the Fijians played in Christchurch. The appreciation of the association will be conveyed to the Canterbury team. Motions of thanks to Mr W. A. Hadlee, for his coaching of the team, and to Mr Cyril Barnes, the groundsman, were also carried. On the recommendation of the competitions committee, the presentation of trophies for the 1952-53 season will be held on the evening of March 31. Official photographs of the Canterbury team will be presented to members of the team at the same function. A Marlborough colts’ team will play a Canterbury team at Hagley Oval on April 4 and 6. An application from the Marlborough Association for a game over Easter was accepted. Mr 1. A. Baxter was appointed player-manager of the Canterbury team. CENTRAL DISTRICTS TEAM CHOSEN (New Zealand Press Association) WANGANUI, March 10. The Central Districts team to play South Africa at New Plymouth in a two-day match on March 18 and 19, is:— H. B. Cave, B. L. Jones, and R. E. Brown (Wanganui), L. Miller and E. M. Mauli (Taranaki), I. Ching, G. S. Botting, I. G. Leggat, and A, A. Hunter (Nelson), B. A. Turner and G. Rowe (Manawatu), F.
