WITNESS’S NAME SUPPRESSED
MAGISTRATE’S ORDE£ »IN ASSAULT C*ASE
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, March 9. Suppression of the name of a witness was granted in the Magistrate’s Court today by Mr H. Jenner Wily, S.M.
Senior-Detective J. B. Finlay obtained the order after a witness had told how three men attacked a constable in a brawl one Saturday night. In applying for the order, Senior-De-tective Finlay said: “Sometimes there are reprisals for men who come forward and give evidence on these disturbances in the city.”
The witness gave evidence in the case of Pineamini Haerewa, aged 29, labourer, who had pleaded not guilty to a charge of assaulting the constable. The Magistrate sentenced him ta a month’s imprisonment with hard labour. The other two men concerned in the assault pleaded guilty and were sentenced last Monday to the same term of imprisonment.
