NARROW ESCAPE FOR N.Z. GUNNERS
(N.Z. Army Information Service) KOREA, March 6.
Two New Zealand gunners this week managed to leap for shelter from their jeep before the vehicle was flattened by a direct hit’from an enemy shell. They were Gunner A. W« Barr (Christchurch) and Gunner F. H. Dempsey (Denniston, West Coast) both members of the 16th New Zealand Field Regiment.
Gunner Barr was driving the vehicle to his troop’s forward observation post with Gunner Dempsey accompanying him when they ran into shelling. Gunner Barr turned the jeep back and, when the shelling continued, parked it in a bay. A few seconds after both men had raced for shelter a driect hit destroyed the vehicle. 1
