AMBERLEY EWE FAIR

EXCELLENT DEMAND FOR TWOTOOTHS PRICES HIGHER BY 3/- TO 4/Secondary descriptions of two-tooth ewes sold buoyantly at 3s to 4s above current rates at the Amberley (northern section) ewe fair yesterday. Old ewes met a rather erratic sale, but many were sold at prices above recent rates. The entry was 18,437, including 5917 two-tooths, against 19,211 last year. As usual, a big proportion of the yarding came from Marlborough, and there was the normal selection of sheep from the Cheviot district properties, and from points further north. The ewes at the second Amberley sale are not usually up to the standard of the southern section fair, and yesterday there were fev> lines of top-class sheep in either the two-tooth or aged ewe sections. Nevertheless, the ewes offered have a good demand from farmers, and the attendance, while not large, contained an encouraging number of buyers. The dry weather kept many spectators at home occupied with jobs delayed by the very wet season.

The ewes were in good order for the most part. Many of the two-tooths were showing the effects of the long spell on soft feed, and some of the older sheep were in fairly light condition, but it was a useful yarding. Many of the lines of two-tooths were of secondary quality,, and this seems to be the type for which there are plenty of buyers at present. They have been cheap relative to older ewes all this season, and there are few buyers for two-tooths oyer about the £5 mark. The demand for these cheaper two-tooths was very »brisk yesterday, and prices from the start were 3s to 4s above recent rates, and in cases a shilling or two more. They sold well throughout the sdle. Older ewes met a more patchy sale. Some lines looked good buying tearlier m the sale, but later many were very fully valued on recent rates. Over all, there was not much change. Many of the Marlborough lines were very early shorn, and buyers bid well on them. Condition did not seem to influence buyers to the extent that it has at the earlier fairs, but they were still on the lookout for foot-rot. Prices were, of course, a big improvement on the fair last year. An average over 28 standard lines of twotooths gave a rise of 17s over last year. An average over 25 lines of four-year ewes showed an appreciation of 12s 6d, and the rise for five-year ewes was Us over 11 lines. The Top Prices Top price was £5 6s for a pen of 75 two-tooths from C. W. Denton (Milburn), who also sold the second price pen at £5 s§. M C. UNREGISTERED RAM SALE AT TIN WALD Lines of rams from well-known breeders sold keenly, but there was little demand for equally good quality rams offered by new or little-known entrants at the special sale erf unregistered rams at Tinwald yesterday. Although the top price of 22gns given for three one-shear Southdown-Border Leicester cross rams offered by E. J. Stewart, Rosebank, Rakaia, was IJgns higher than the top price of last year’s fair, the sale was not as good as expected. In fact, it was erratic, and towards the end slackened considerably. There was an impressive yarding of Southdown-Borders. Representative sales were:—Four South-down-Borders offered by Jas. Jones at 20gns., three by R. W. Oakley at 14gns, three by C. T. A. and O. R. Ward at 18gns, four by H. A. Jones at 17gns, and four by R. G. Donaldson at 16gns. L. J. Galletly sqld four one-shear Suf-folk-Ryelands for 9ns. Three one-shear Romney-Corriedale cross rams sold on account of S. W. Galletly for 19jgns. South Suffolk rams brought up to 20gns.
