BEVANS ATTACK EISENHOWER

“Disappointed At U.S. Election Result”

LONDON, November 10. What the “Daily Mail” described as an “astonishing attack” was made by Mr Aneurin Bevan and his wife, Miss Jennie Lee, on Mr Eisenhower in weekend speeches. Mr Bevan said: “I would like to say, quite frankly, that I think that the vast majority of British people are profoundly disappointed by the result of the American elections. Although I congratulate Mr Eisenhower on his success, I would rather there be a Democrat President in the United States at present. “Mr Eisenhower has promised to bring the Korean war to an end. I hope he is successful, but I would like to tell him this, ihat he will not have the support of the British people if he tries to bring this war to an enu by a territorial extension of the conflict. “I do not believe that Britain’s people are prepared to go to war with the mainland of China in order to end this fight in Korea. In this matter I speak for myself alone.”

Miss Jennie Lee said: “The right kind of world leadership is not going to come from America. Many of us hoped that the Liberal element would come to the top, but it has not. Mr Eisenhower is a creature of the most reactionary and anti-social elements in America. That is going to have repercussions not only on the Americans, but on us.

“I do not believe that Soviet Russia is any more able to give the right kind nf leadership than capitalist America. But do not forget that outside Russia and America there are two billion people.”
