WRECK BLOCKING PORT
SALVAGE SHIPS RACE TO ROTTERDAM
LONDON, November 10. British salvage ships raced across the North Sea towards Rotterdam today in worsening weather to free the bottled-up port. The port—one of Europe’s busiest—has been virtually paralysed since Thursday when gales lashed Europe and sank a Panamanian steamer across the entrance. Attempts will be made to raise the sunken vessel, but salvage experts think that the ship may have to be blown up to free the channel. The damage to the port is estimated at millions of guilders.
In other parts of Europe worsening weather caused heavy snowfalls and blocked communications. In Switzerland, all the major alpine passes are impassable. Snow is still falling and is more than three feet deep in places. Italy also shivered under a cold spell and in Florence the temperature was three degrees below freezing point.
