CODE OF ETHICS FOR PRESS
WORLD CONVENTION PROPOSED (Rec. 8 p.m.) NEW YORK, Nov. 10. The Social Committee of the United Nations General Assembly today requested the Secretary-General to assist professional journalists to hold an international convention to draft a code of ethics for their profession. A resolution adopted by the committee proposed that all further work on the draft code should be done by professional journalists and requested the Secretary-General to co-operate with representatives of information enterprises and national and international professional associations in organising an international professional conference if those bodies expressed a desire to do so. The purposes of the international convention would be to adopt the final text of the international code of ethics and to take steps to implement the code. The Secretary-General was also requested to bring the resolution to the attention of professional journalistic organisations. The Soviet group opposed the resolution.
