GERMAN LOCAL ELECTIONS

SWING TO RIGHT BONN, November 10. An over-all swing to the Right and the almost complete defeat of the Communists were features of yesterday’s municipal elections in three states of North and Western Germany. However, the Social Democrats, a Left-wing party, became, for the first time, the most powerful party in the industrial State of North RhineWestphalia, which contains more than a quarter of the population of Western Germany. The Christian Democratic Union, led by the West German Chancellor (Dr Konrad Adenauer) lost votes to the Free Democrats, the second biggest partner of his three-party coalition.

The Christian Democratic Union suffered losses in North RhineWestphalia and the Rhineland Palatinate.
