POLO TEAM MAY VISIT SYDNEY

CANTERBURY ASKED TO SEND PLAYERS

A Canterbury water polo team has been invited to play at Sydney next January by the Water Polo Association of New South Wales. This information was received at a meeting of the Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association last evening in a letter from the secretary of the Canterbury Water Polo Board (Mr W.*H. Dyson). Mr Dyson requested the centre’s permission for His board to act in the matter.

“No guarantee of finance has been made, but they promise a ’large percentage of the net profits from the carnivals’ to assist in defraying the expenses of the tour,” said Mr Dyson. “Dates, etc., will be advised as soon as they are known, so that you can apply to the Dominion Council for official permissidn for us to go ahead on the scheme.”

Mr Dyson said that he had already replied to the Australians that Canterbury was definitely interested in such a tour and he had asked for further information, so that a final decision might be made. “We must make it quite clear to the water polo board that they must not involve the centre in anything financial,” said the secretary (Miss Doreen Brown). Delegates agreed that the water polo board should be congratulated and supported in the arrangement of the tour so long as the centre was not called on to help to pay the expenses of the tour. A motion granting the centre’s permission for the board to arrange for the tour was then passed.
