BUDDHISM IN CEYLON

“THREAT TO EXISTENCE OF CHRISTIANITY” (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. November 11.

Backed up by modern publicity methods. Buddhism is threatening the existence of Christianity in Ceylon, according to the Rev.’H. K. Vickery, who arrived at Wellington in the Monowai this morning.

Mr Vickery, who has been relieving as chaplain in charge at the Colombo Seamens Mission, said that under British rule most of the leaders in Ceylon’s national life received their education in Christian schools. Most of them at least retained the Christian influence, even if all did not retain the Christian religion, but today Ceylon's political leaders were Buddhists. Some members of Ceylon's Parliament who were once “bread and butter Christians” had become Buddhists to remain in political favour.

The Buddhists were adopting modern publicity methods, making extensive use of the radio, establishing their own schools and sending more missionaries into the field.
