U.N. APPEAL FOR CHILDREN

MANY LOCAL BODY DONATIONS SUBSTANTIAL GIFTS FROM INDIVIDUALS “New Zealanders are proving themselves just as generous in the present United Nations Appeal for Children as they were in the two previous appeals, two and four years ago respectively,” says a bulletin received from the Dominion headquarters of the appeal in Wellington. “They are showing this montn that they fully realise the Continuing .need to provide food and medical care for the children of less fortunate countries than this? Many local bodies have made grants to the appeal, and besides the £5OO given by each of the tour major city councils, grants ranging from 25 guineas to £lOO have been made by other local bodies throughout the Dominion. the bulletin says. Donations from individuals are also being received in ever-increasing numbers, says the bulletin. The best of these so far has been £4OO. received from a woman in Auckland. Other donations of £3OO from a man in Auckland, £250 from a Gisborne farmer, £2OO from a Waikari farmer, and many amounts of £5O and more have been received frpm persons throughout the country. Great assistance is also being given by the schools, says the bulletin. Ashburton provides perhaps the most striking example. In this comparatively small town, the Convent raised £lOO 10s, High School £63 4s 6d, and the Technical School £46 2s lOd.

“Those Who have not already given something to help the world’s needy children are urged to do so at once, because the need in many countries today is still a very pressing one. and children are dying prematurely for want of the help that our money could send them,” said Mr J. T. Martin, the national chairman of the appeal, in Wellington. All the money raised by the appeal will be spent in New Zealand on supplies for overseas. Because of the “matching principle” insisted on by the United Nations Children’s Fund, whereby every country receiving help for its children must provide an equal amount of assistance of its own, every £ subscribed in New Zealand now resulted in £2 being snent on assistance to the children needing it. Donations may be made locally, usually to the offices or city, borough, and county councils, or by post to Box 1993 Wellington.
