HOTEL HOURS
Sir, —C. D. Rosie is very fond of quoting figures in his tirade against normal, moderate drinking. Therefore, it might interest him to know the following figures quoted at the 24th International Congress Against Alcoholism, held in Paris last month. The country with the highest proportion of alcoholics in the world is France (22 for every 1009 adults). Runnersup were Switzerland. 16 for every 1000 adults: Chile, 15; the United States, 10; Australia. 6.7; down to Great Britain, with the smallest percentage of all, 2.8. Judging by these figures it seems that Britain, with her expended drinking hours, is at an advantage over Australia with her 6 o’clock closing (except in Queensland). —Yours, etc., G. HERRICK. October 7, 1952.
