RUSSIAN RELATIONS
Sir, —Bear baiting used to be a favourite pastime in England in the Middle Ages. America now seems to have taken on the sport and appears hurt that the bear’s latest tormenter, Mr George Kennan, has been kicked out of Russia. I think most people were expecting it. There surely must be a limit to what a diplomat may say about the country he is residing in. I was grieved to see our Sir Carl Berendsen talking about “the jackals of the Kremlin” some time ago. Are these utterances conducive to peace? Why do men in responsible positions make such irresponsible statements? — Yours, etc.,
