FUNDS FOR AIR RACE

AIM OF RETAILERS’ RAFFLE

PRESIDENT APPEALS FOR SUPPORT

If the people of Christchurch buy tickets in the retailers’ raffle for the England-Christchurch air race next year, they will have not only the chance of winning valuable prizes but also the opportunity of contributing towards a project that will bring a feeling of pride in their province of Canterbury, according to the president of the Canterbury and Westland Retailers’ Association (Mr W. A. McKinney). “This raffle will give the public of Christchurch a sense of having helped personally to support this outstanding event,’’ said Mr McKinney yesterday when he appealed for the fullest public support of the raffle. “December 18, 1950, was an historic day for Christchurch when its international airport was officially opened at Harewood. On a day. in Octobers 1953. the Christchurch airport will again be in the news of the world when the world’s latest types of aircraft will touch doWn at the conclusion of the international air race. That is, if sufficient funds are available.” said Mr McKinney.

“Realising that it must play its part, the Canterbury and Westland Retailers’ Association has promoted a monster raffle and aims to raise £5OOO. The members of the association have generously given valuable prizes. The first prize is a woman’s complete outfit worth £l5O, the second prize is a man’s complete outfit worth £lOO, and there are 11 other prizes. “Tickets are only Is each, and can be purchased at most retail stores in the citv or suburbs. The. prizes are on display in the windows of the main retailers, and are being displayed in different stores in turn,” said Mr McKinney.
