CORAL ARC AND NOTABLE

SMART MILE GALLOP TRIAL FOR MASTERTON RACE Coral Are and Notable, two of four Riccarton horses which were taken north last night to race at Masterton on Saturday, were partners in an outstanding gallop at Riccarton yesterday morning. By arrangement they ran a mile on the outside of the course proper in Imin 43 l-ssec. They increased their speed to run their last half in 50 l-ssec. Notable, ridden by R. McSeveny, had Hie bitter of the weights, and she beat Coral Arc by half a length. Coral Arc was ridden by his usual jockey, A. J. Stokes. Royal Voyage (B. Gordon) started with Coral Arc and Notable, but he finished well back. Royal Voyage is to race at Westport. Declare and Paper Royal, two other Masterton candidates, galloped on the course while there was a thick fog. and they could not be timed. Sun Chief (R. McSeveny) showed that he was well forward to resume racing when he finished alongside Ngapunawai (B. Hillis) after running seven furlongs in Imin 30sec. R. Wilson will take Sun Chief to the Westport meeting. This smart galloper Should be hard to beat in the sprints there.. Easy Work Desperado (C. C. Stokes) was let off with an easy seven furlongs. He ran the distance in Imin 36sec ana dawdled over the last half-mile in 56ftec. Lords (G. W. Mein) was well blear of Calm Voyage (F. H. Skelton) and Star Act (R. McSeveny) at the end of five furlongs, the last half-mile in 50 3-ssec. Lords did his work nicely, and was much too good for his companions. Most of the other work was done the reverse way on the trial grass, which was hard and fast. Spike Jones (D. M. Kerf), after being four lengths behind early, drew up to finish a neck behind his stablemate, Surprise Ending (Miss F. Kerr), in their run over half a mile. They recorded 48 4-ssec. A trip to Trentham is planned for Spike Jones, a smart galloper, but slow to work up speed. Poilu (P. Hill) led Pukka Sahib (N. East wood) over a mile, finished a length in front, and recorded Imin 44 4-ssec, the last half in 51 2-ssec. These two will race at the Westport meeting. Magical, ridden by C. C. Stokes, was galloping easily at the end of a mile in 50 l-ssec. Magical has been racing more generously lately, and he will probably be hard to beat in the Colvin Handicap at Westport on Saturday. Instinctive (N. Dempsey) was galloping easily half a length in front of Vitalogy (G. Lee) at the end of six furlongs in Imin 15 2-ssec. They dashed over the first half-mile in 48 2-ssec. Instinctive has not had a racing preparation for the Roche Handicap at westport, but he is well forward. It will be surprising if he fails to do well at the meeting. To Race at Geraldine Aegina (F. H. Skelton) was shading Gone Away (R. McSeveny) at the end of half a mile in 48 4-ssee. Aegina is making good progress in her preparation for her race at the second Geraldine spring meeting. Absence (B. Hillis) was not out to make time in her half-mile gallop. She recorded 53 2-ssec. Royal Tan (R. Grey) was well clear of Tyro (N. Eastwood) on completing a mile in the smart time of Imin 42 3-ssec, the last half in 51 3-ssec. Royal Tan worked with great dash. He is carrying his years lightly. On the plough, Margaret Leigh (N. Dempsey) ran right away from Blue Flash (B. Lake) over seven furlongs, run in Imin 31 3-ssec. Margaret Leigh ran the last half-mile in 53 l-ssec. She is to race at Westport, where the best will be seen of her if the track is heavy. Orontes (N. Penton), another Westport candidate, ran his seven furlongs in Imin 33 l-ssec. The last half-mile took 53 3-ssec. Profane, ridden by A. J. Williams, gave a neat display over four hurdles. C. Emerson will take him north for the spring meeting at Trentham.
