RACING AND TROTTING

DALRAY’S WIN IN SYDNEY Horse “Not Asked For His Best” TRENCH FRAY GOES AMISS (From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH, October 7. Dalray was not asked for his best when he won the Metropolitan Handicap in Sydney, said his owner, Mr Cyril Neville, in a telephone conversation with relatives in Greymouth on Monday. Most racing writers in Australia, said Mr Neville, now described Dalray as the best horse ever to win the Metropolitan Handicap. Sydney newspapers carried front page banner headlines acclaiming Dalray’s performance. Reversal, another member of C. C. McCarthy’s team now in Sydney, will probably gain further racing experience in the distance , hack race at Randwick tomorrow. Mr Neville has received congratulatory messages on Dalray’s success from many friends and well-wishers throughout New Zealand and also in Australia. Trench Fray’s present trip to Australia will necessarily be a holiday one. He has pulled a muscle, and will return to New Zealand with Dalray and Reversal without having raced, as he did with success in the autumn. WIN ON HEAVY TRACK OWNER’S CONFIDENCE JUSTIFIED (N.Z.P.A. —Reuter—Copyright) SYDNEY, October 7. Dalray’s owner, Mr Cyril Neville, argued for three hours before convincing his trainer, C. C. McCarthy, and the jockey, K. Nuttall, that the horse should start in the Metropolitan Handicap, says the Sydney “Daily Telegraph.” Both McCarthy and Nuttall doubted Dalray’s ability to handle-the heavy track. Mr Neville said he believed Dalray would handle the heavy going, and his confidence overruled the doubts of McCarthy and Nuttall. McCarthy commented that Dalray’s win proved he knew more about training Dalray than those who had criticised his method. . Yesterday morning McCarthy exercised Dalray for several circuits of the cinder track at Randwick before galloping him for seven furlongs at half-pace on the grass. This is considered by Sydney trainers to be extraordinary training on a race morning. Dalray wore brushing boots on his forelegs in the race, and when he returned to scale the boots were filled with grass and mud. The horse’s head was also spattered with mud. The Sydney "Morning Herald,” commenting on the race, says Nuttall rode a well-judged race to get to the front about a furlong and a half from the post. Nuttall did not go around one horse during the race. Although the going was particularly heavy near the rails, he did not hesitate to send Dalray through, and -the hoTse did not falter in a single stride. The impression that Jan was gaining on Dalray at the finish was influenced by the fact that Nuttall was slowing Dalray down in the last few strides. Dalray is now firm favourite for the Melbourne Cup. but he may not start in that race. Mr Neville has warned backers that Dalray is a doubtful starter, as he thinks he has too much weight. “INVITATION” TO RUN IN MOONEE VALLEY CUP MELBOURNE, October 7. Dalray, with 9st 41b in the Moonee Valley Gold Cup on October 25, has been given an “invitation” to run by the Moonee Valley Racing Club handicapper, Mr George Grant. Weights, issued last night, have been framed on a flattering scale. Dalray/ rated as the best horse in Australia with 41b over weight-for-age, is better off in this event than in either the Metropolitan Handicao or the Melbourne Cup because of the difference in the minimum weights in those races. In the Moonee Valley Cup Delta is topweight with 9st 91b. followed by Dalray 9st 41b, Bronton 9st. Davev Jones 9st, Morse Code «st 111 b. Chatspa Bst 101 b. Midway Bst 101 b. Benvolo Bst 91b. Flying Halo Bst 91b. Hoyle Bst 91b. Montana Bst 91b. Sea Wolf has Bst 21b, Unfaan Bst. and Putoko 7st 131 b. CRAVEN PLATE AT RANDWICK DALRAY REPORTED TO BE ACCEPTOR (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, Oct. 7. Dalray is a surprise acceptor for tomorrow’s Craven Plate, according to a Sydney broadcast heard tonight. Tne track at Randwick has dried out a great deal, and the promised meeting of Dalray, the A.J.C. Derby winner, Deep River, and Hydrogen, at weight-for-age over a mile and a quarter, is causing intense interest. The race is for a stake of £2500 with sweepstakes of £2O. Others in the field include Montana and Grey Boots. The race will start at 4.45 p.m. (New Zealand time); Reversal is an acceptor in two handicaps, but he Js likely to contest the mile and a half Sydney Handicap, in which he will be ridden bv the successful lightweight, P. Burkhardt. COLIN STEPHEN STAKES NUTTALL SHOWED LITTLE RESPECT FOR MUNRO Dalray’s Riccarton jockey, K. Nuttall, showed scant respect for the combination of Hydrogen and Darby Munro over the final stages of the Colin Stephen Stakes, won by the New Zealand champion, at Randwick on Saturday. That is not surprising to New Zealanders, but it was apparently so for many who watched the race. One Sydney Sunday newspaper commented: ‘‘Onlookers stood with their mouths open as they saw Keith Nuttall on the Tasman invader ‘kidding’ to Munro in the straight. . . Apparently Munro’s reputation meant nothing to Nuttall, who, the moment he ranged alongside Hydrogen, did the ‘sit-still act’ and kept looking over at Munro without once calling on Dalray to stretch out.” With the sweepstakes attached to Monday’s Metronolitan stake. Dalray’s owner, Mr Cyril Neville, would receive £4680 for first money. This raises the horse’s winnings to £25.237 10s, the result of 10 wins and three placings in 18 starts. Dalray was bought as a yearling for 460gns by his trainer, C. C. McCarthy, who sold him to Mr Neville for the same amount. DALRAY’S WEIGHT IN MELBOURNE CUP (N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) (Rec. 10 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Oct. 7. A Melbourne Cup penalty, if any. for Dalray would not be announced until after October 11, said the Victorian Racing Club handicapper, Mr C. Davis, today. Dalray, which has 9-6 in the Melbourne Cup, can be penalised up to 101 b. Owner C. Neville is reported to have said Dalray is an unlikely cup runner, as he considers the horse already harshly handicapped. COUNTENANCE AND REFORMED ARRIVAL IN SYDNEY YESTERDAY (Rec. 1 p.m.) SYDNEY, Oct. 7. The New Zealand horses, Countenance and Reformed, which have been backed for £200.000 for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups double, arrived in Sydnev by the Monowai to-day. The owner-trainer, Joe Brown, who took the double for a small-outlay, and the jockey, Eddie Low, and his brother, an apprentice, Charlie Low, accompanied the horses. Brown also brought Gay Revel and Royal Tower to race in the minor events in Melbourne.

Moodabe, held good at the Randi wick races yesterday. In a driving finish ; his horse, Montana, won the George Main Stakes, a weight-for-age event, beating Grey Boots, which won the Doncaster Handicap and the Caulfield Cup in 1950. Mr Moodabe, owner of a chain of picture theatres in New Zealand, often comes to Sydney to see one of his horses run. As usual he was not disappointed yesterday. Mr Moodabe has never visited Australia without seeing one of his horses win. and including five doubles, his successes total 21. Horses to win in his colours include Sea Hawk, Sea Wolf, and Montana. DAVEY JONES BACK IN WORK (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9 p.m.) SYDNEY, October 7. The New Zealander. Davey Jones, has recovered from the injury that caused him to miss the Metropolitan Handicap yesterday. He pulled up well after a steady three furlongs in 44sec on the steeplechase grass at Randwick today. Davey Jones injured his off hind foot last week. He will leave for Melbourne later this week to prepare for a run in the Caulfield Cup, in which he finished third last year. The Metropolitan winner, Dalray, was also out for steady work. A turf writer said: “He looks brighter than ever, and could run again tomorrow.”
