RUMANIAN PUBLISHING HOUSE

Sir, —From little known Rumania behind the Iron Curtain comes the following—4ooo workers have erected a building known as “Scantreia House.” It covers 10 acres of ground, and consists of three blocks built round courtyards, the main block being eight storeys high. In this building machinery is being installed to print 3,000,000 newspapers, 100,000 bound books and 160,000 pamphlets a day. All freight traffic to the building aproaches it underground so that the working staff may the better enjoy the 100 acres of surrounding gardens—gardens dotted with flower beds, statuary, fountains and pools. The entire building is air-conditioned and piped for hot water. Drinking water is cooled in summer, fluorescent bulbs give artificial daylight and the most modern loud speakers and tele-speakers have been installed. Some effort for Rumania!—Yours, etc.. DOUGLAS CRESSWELL. October 6, 1952.
